HFY has now been in the public awareness for about 4-5 years. If I may share with you what has attracted me to the system, I would have to say that the HFY system as a whole opened up so many doors and answered so many questions that I myself would probably have NEVER asked in the first place!
Literally every posture AND motion is driven by a principle, a concept, and a theory. On top of that, it is all bounded by a concrete formula (resulting from a scientific approach to understanding combat). Wow! I asked myself how anything like this could be possible. At one point it seemed too extreme or even rediculous! But once I began to train it, follow its logic flow, understand the systematic approach, I began to see it bit by bit, and the connections began to reveal itself. From body mechanics, to technical knowledge, to skill challenging it was all completely consistent with everything else in the system to a T. This was much more valueable and definitely more intriguing that what I have learned before.
After a time I began to understand that there are actually two types of self defense/combat. Folk (civilian) and military. HFY I think, would fall into the category of military combat. The reasons I can see for this are two fold:
1) a militaric approach to combat takes into consideration the use of resource, tactical and strategic arrays (formations) optimal to the user, and seeks out the most efficient way to get the job with factors of risk management taken into extreme account.
2) according to HFY lore and traditions, it is a byproduct of the culmination of both Chan Monk and Ming (Dynasty) military officers both existing for a common goal. This commonality was that of understanding reality through two things:
a) the harmony/balance of Time, Space, and Energy in relation to the human body and its relationship to the universe (Chan), and
b) the above point through the reality of life and death, taking into considerations matters of efficiency (Military)
They accomplished this by developing a combat system which embodies both A and B, hence HFYWCK. The system is as intricate in areas of Combat as it is in Health as well as Philosophy. All these 3 factors are - as I understand and have experienced thus far - entirely consistent and complimentary to each other. So, for me I can identify and appreciate HFY as a true gem of the Southern Shaolin Temple.
I would like to invite others to share their opinions/understanding as well. Thank you.
