Last weekend Sifu Meng, Richard Loewenhagen, Mike Mathews, Jeremy Roadruck, JK Walz, and I met at HFY Headquarters in San Francisco for an extended weekend of training. I just wanted to take a moment to share some parts of that experience.
This trip contained several firsts for me personally. First and most significantly, it was my first trip to Sigung's school. From a HFY technical perspective it was an excellent learning experience. Sigung enlightened us on several technical and conceptual aspects of jung sin paak sau, kiu sau (especially bong laap kiu sau), the dummy, and the chum kiu form. We may want to start some separate threads on these subjects. It was also extremely enlightening to see the connections between kiu sau, the first two sections of the dummy, and the chum kiu form. The more you experience and learn, the more you really get to see the logic and relationships within the HFY system. I am also trying to deepen my conceptual learning. This trip really helped me in that area. Several SF-based students of Sigung were also very helpful to the out-of-towners. Alan, Alex, and Rick (to name just a key few) took a great deal of their time to help and train with us. It was much appreciated.
It was also my first visit to SF's chinatown. I have enjoyed visiting NYC's chinatown in the past, but SF chinatown has both a very unique quality about it as well as some very interesting history. I can't wait to go back again. In addition to some fantastic asian restaurants, Sigung also gave us a walking tour, pointing out such sights as the place where Bruce Lee worked and the stage on which he had a public challenge match. Mike Mathews did a great job of surviving non-trivial periods of time between visits to Starbucks (fortunately there was one a stone's throw from the hotel...) and we all survived on very little sleep.
I would really like to thank Sifu and Sigung for all the time and energy that they spent with us over the course of the weekend. It was really a great learning experience.
