no worries Tone. Here's a few quick bits of information from the above links. (#1 corresponds to the first link and so on ....) It's almost like the "Readers Digest" condensed version or something. :D
1. "At the end of Qing Dynasty, the Guangzhau ( 廣州 ) dialect was used in Cantonese Opera because the cultured people wanted to make use of Cantonese Opera as propaganda for voicing revolution . In order to make Guangzhau people understand more easily, lots of Cantonese was used."
2."The genre of Chinese Operas came by Opera houses. The earliest Opera house to be found in history is the Ha Fa Wui Gwoon."
3. "In the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) one man, Cheung Ng [張五] (1720 AD) a northern opera actor, had a great influenced on present day Yuet Kahk. Escaping authorities due to his anti-Manchu activities, he fled southwards to Canton. Hiding out amongst Cantonese opera troupes he taught and past the knowledge of performing the traditional "Eighteen plays of Cantonese Opera"(江湖十八本). His contributions earned him a place in Taoist opera heaven, where he along with the God of Chinese Opera "Waih Gong"(華光) is worshiped by "Disciples of the Pear Garden" at every performance."
