View Full Version : Chi Gerk
Hello everybody,
I've been doing some internet reading on chi gerk lately, trying to figure out what exactly this training set entails, and I've come up with a couple questions:
Why is chi gerk rarely taught? I understand that YM himself was very reluctant to teach chi gerk to anyone, and i still see that attitude reflected today.
I've seen pictures of special kicking posts, which I've seen referred to as gerk jong, what are these for?
Where is chi gerk suppossed to fit in the system? Typically the set goes SNT - CK - BG - MYJ - Pole - Swords, where does chi gerk fit in?
Thanks!
Armin

Hi eric,
these kicking posts are called 'tripodial dummy' and there is a special form to play with them. 'Rumour' says, that Yip Man left this form away, because he had no place (in Hongkong) to put this kind of dummy to. He faced the same problem with the wooden dummy, that was stuck into the ground before Yip Man went to Hongkong - something that was impossible at the Rest. workers union.

Eric,
It might seem like some great mystery to you right now, but once you truly understand the logic flow of our system in your mind and your body, you won't be so confused.
Practice the footwork you've been taught thus far, cover your lower gate, and know your self-centerline. Keep light on your toes... Meaning..... DON'T STOMP YOUR FEET!! Learn what over committing means as applied to footwork.
The rest will come in due time... there is much to understand ahead of you.
Have to say, I'm curious as to why you posted your question here... under the YM section.
Remember, I did YM also. Think about our concept of long arm short arm... now think about your typical YM stance. 60/40?? 70/30??? Do you imderstand what I'm saying???
That's the rub about a true system... it's all in the logic flow!

id like to take a stab at the whole chi gerk thing.
in my training, we drilled chi gerk during our study of the biu jee form. it was studied at this time, becuase we had already extensive drilling in the chum kiu footwork. and now with the study of biu jee we were addressing the lower gates even more. circling steps, side stepping, shifting all that stuff must be engrained so taht chi gerk will be constructive. i would love to see how to use the poles. i have only ever done it in two man drilling.
does any one have any links or info on where to find info about the tripodal dummy form. if there is one. ?
i would love to know!!
Thanks for Responses everyone,
Armin,
interesting bit of history there! I wonder how else hongkong changed how YM did his kung fu?
Duende,
I understand what you are saying, but I was curios in particular about YM chi gerk, that's why I asked in the YM forum. Of the YM system, the only parts I have yet to see some of are chi gerk and the doa. For some reason, there seems to be more mystique behind chi gerk (you can find videos/pictures of the swords everywhere, but little info on CG) and I was just wondering at what layer other people have had it introduced to them/ what layer it made the most sense for a student to learn.
