Are you planning on attending your sifu's Camp? I'd like to hear more on the topics posted above. It said "WC forms" what families of WC are attending? "Traditional weapons", what kind of weapons are going to be shown? It's sound fun! It would be nice to get something like this going down towards me in AZ or southern CA. I've heard of a few but mainly their on the east coast!
Thanks for sharing, JamesHFY

I'll be one of the ones teaching at the camp, my segment will include Mok Jong applications, skill and conditioning.

Wing Chun forms in this context means we will be addressing applications and such from some of the Wing Chun forms, Shil Lum Tao, Chum Kiu and Biu Gee. All families of Martial Art are invited to attend, not just Wing Chun clans.

In all of the Summer Camps, Sifu presents knowledge of the other systems of Kung Fu that he is skilled in, Hung Gar, Butterfly Palms, and Hard style Wing Chun (Wong Shun Leung system). Two man forms, weapons of various nature, Chi Kung and Chin na have also been presented from other families of Kung Fu not related to Wing chun at these camps. Overall there is about 7 hours a day of training time for those that attend. It's usually nice weather in Calgary at this time of year and also the world famous Calgary Stampede is happening at the same time, so if you like Kung Fu and Rodeo then this is the event for you..

Thank you for the post, it sounds like an interesting time in Calgary no doubt if I actually lived closer it sounds like something worth checking out but hopefully since it is an annual event one day I will be lucky enough to attend.

How did the Summer Seminar work out?

It was a great success, with over 50 people from all over attending the event.

At this event, every instructor had a opportunity to teach a particular aspect of the Wing Chun system to the participants, this was great as some of us have never seen these instructors teach before and showed the great quality present throught the Canadian Wing Chun Kung Fu Association.

James,
That sounds like an interesting concept were you able to follow each teacher's different style of teaching did you take anything from one particular teacher that you found was similiar or more in line with your current training?

Well to be truthful it was hard to see a particular style of teaching as each instructor was only allowed approximently 30 minutes twice throughtout the event to present their material to the participants (for e.g. I was alloted 30 minutes on the Saturday and Monday, my material covered the Mok Jong, applications, skills and conditioning). One of the instructors currently lives in Vancouver and is not teaching at this time but is learning Aikido, and you could see the influence. Basically for me it just shows another way of explining it all from a different perspective, but in essence all the material presented reflects the same principals and concepts I teach everyday.

Could you explain that in more detail just curious.

Well he emphasized more Chin na in his movements and techniques. His area of responsiblity during the seminar was combat techniques and he used more grappling than striking. I talked with him after his session during the seminar and he told me he has always had a fascination with Japanese culture and traditions so Aikido fullfills the desire he has to become closer to that culture. Plus it was just something you could see in the way he did things. Obviously if someone is into something, it will show in what they do.

So did he explain why he thought akido and wing chun are a good mix and if so was his explanation something you could agree with, understand or were indifferent too or maybe you just felt is was something of a more personal nature to do with him and him alone.

He did say there where many similarities between the two arts for sure, and also said that there is allot of Japanese Tradition associated with Aikido and the school he was attending. From my perspective he is learning the art strictly to fulfill a personal need and curiosity. Personally this is okay to me as people have a right to experience anything they want to experience. Similar to GM Gee, my own Sifu has experience in more than one system of Martial Arts so if it’s okay for them, it should be okay for anyone. I guess it broadens one's horizons in a way.
