With the completion of the 2003 Taiji Legacy, the Ving Tsun Museum Kung Fu family has successfully taken the Wing Chun Grand Championship at all tournaments that feature a Grand Championship. Robert Hannon, leader of the Saginaw Ving Tsun Club in Michigan took honors the weekend of August 1-3 in Dallas, Texas in a field of 30 competitors - one of the largest to date for the Wing Chun division.
To understand the significance of the Wing Chun Grand Champion status, competitors must participate in a total of 4 events: Forms, Wooden Dummy, Chi Sau and Sparring - this combination of events demonstrates skills in all aspects of Wing Chun. In each of these four events first place earns 10 points, second place earns 7 points and third place earns 5 points. All the points are added together to calculate the Grand Championship. Robert had 2 first places, one second place and one third place. In special recognition, Sifu Jason Lau's student Bashkim Ukperaj won his full-contact San Shao division, showcasing Wing Chun skills under some serious pressure.
With this win, Sifu Robert Hannon joins other Ving Tsun Museum champions Mike Mathews, Jeremy Roadruck, Chango Noaks, and Joe Seidenschmidt – winners of Regional, National and Pan-American titles.
