Fong Shil Ching, fact and misconception
by GM Prof Rien Bul

Fong Shil Ching (also often spelled ‘Fung Siu Ching’) plays an important role in early Wudang Weng Shun Kuen history because he is one of the few verifiable historical persons in it.

The person who was said to have taught Fong the Weng Shun Kuen system is known in our lineage by the name Leung Shum Dit. About this particular person few facts are certain. He was probably the same person some other Weng Shun Kuen and Wing Chun Kuen lineages refer to as Sun Kam or Lok Kam or under his alias alias ‘Dai Fa Min Kam’. The latter translates as ‘Painted face Kam’ because his role in the plays the opera troups of which Leung Shum Dit was a member performed required of him that he wore heavy make-up. It is said that Leung in his turn was a direct student of Cheung Ng. But this is far from certain. Personally, I think that the true source from which the Red Junk opera-rebels drew the knowledge on which they eventually build the system that was to be called Weng Shun Kuen who was a Daoist monk who we now only know of as ‘The white crane Daoïst’. The well known legends about Chang Shan Feng, Ng Mui, Fong Weng Shun and Chi Sim Sim Si were probably made up by the rebels to cover up his true identity. He was probably also the source from where Chu Gar* (better known as ‘Phoenix Eye Fist Gung Fu’) and related systems sprang. It is said he lived in a cave known as the ‘White Crane cave’. No doubt that is where he got his nickname from. But what about the ‘Daoïst’-part? Any ideas? It is also hardly unthinkable that this ‘White Crane’ (also) had something to do with the style the man probably practiced.

Back to Fong. He was, according to the stories my Sifu told me, a pretty successfull and famous army-General. Apart from my Sifu’s stories on Fong I was unable to find more info about him until the book ‘Complete Wing Chun’ was published. I was astonished to find that other lineages also referred to his actual existence. I was very much intrigued, especially when someone off-handidly remarked it was "Fong who was responsible for putting in the obvious Tai Ji Quan elements in Weng Shun Kuen". Indeed, when one compares Wudang Weng Shun Kuen, Pan Nam Weng Chun Kuen or even Chi Sim Weng Chun Kuen with Tai Ji Quan, one is bound to find many strong similarities with Tai Ji Quan in them. The biggest differences are mostly found in the footwork. But the handtechniques, the theories, principles and saying are often literally, the same. But I am quite convinced that this has nothing to do with General Fong adding these Wudang influences from an outside source. If one has a true and thorough understanding of Weng Shun Kuen, no matter which of the above lineages they choose, it is an absolute and undisputed certainty that it has been an internal style from its conception! Every movent is based on principles that are common only in the styles we know as ‘internal’ or ‘soft’ (neija). The reason is that both Weng Shun Kuen and Tai Ji Quan are from the same source; a style we now call Wudang Quan for lack of a better name because the original name of the system got lost. The name Tai Ji Quan was probably first used at the beginning of the twentiesth century. At least not much earlier.

* Note: Legends surrounding the creation of Chu Gar speak of a nun who lived in a cave known as the ‘White Crane-cave’ who taught a simplified version of White Crane Gung Fu to two young sisters who based their own style on it. The story doesn’t just sound familiar, the system itself bears great resemblance to Weng Shun Kuen/Wing Chun Kuen.

Where did you gather this information if I may ask? Is it verifiable?

I cant talk about anyone elses system but Chu Gar and what your saying does not seem right.

Chu gar from what info i was given is royal family fist from the north that migrated & developed in Fukien temple(being general). Becoming southern mantis. Where does the White crane daoist come in. That 2 sister story I believe is from the malaysian Chu Ka history. It has some stuff that looks a little like CHu gar mantis but not completely. There are other Chu gar styles. When people think of Chu Gar they mostly think of the mantis style. The style you speak of is pretty much practiced in that certain area. Id like to see someone else practice that system in another country with no relation to the Malay group other then coming from China.

Could the WC daoist be another name for Gee Sim si? The White crane meaning Siu lum and Daoist meaning soft. Southern Siu Lum is based on Chan. From what I been reading Chan is a combination Buddhism and Daoism. Sorry I know nothing so please forgive my ignorance on Chan and Gee Sim Si.

I also read somewhere that Gee Sim Si could have help developed southern hakka kuen. I might agree with that since i see some key moves that are simmilar from the little Weng Chun i had studied. But this is not proven fact either.

IM probably wrong with this statement. I think Wing Chun and SPM are close but i dont think there super close. They might have been cousins but not sisters. They are both different animals that practice the short hand method.

Can anyone else add to this?

I have trouble with any information where the author uses Manderin and Cantonese interchangebly. Taijiquan, wudangquan, all Manderin wording. This usually means that the author took information from various sources, and didn't really know the information himself. There is a series of books written on Hung-Ga that goes from Cantonese to Manderin phonetic to pinyin, yale, wade-giles romanizations, and most of the "History" came from Shaw Bros. films. Be careful what you take as gospel.

The story of wengshunkuen is interesting but it is not the story of (chi sim) weng chun. In Hongkong famous "Dai Duk Lan" all successors of Ancestor Fung Siu Ching met and collect all informations. As the successor of Dai Duk Lan I collect all the knowledge from there. We have handwritten documents how was the life from GGM Fung Siu Ching and who really learned from him and how long and in which way the people learned.

Back to the article. I think Fong Shil Ching is not the same as weng chun GGM Fung Siu Ching, because GGM Fung Siu Ching was never a General nor he put Tai Chi elements into the system. Another prove for this is that GGM Fung Siu Ching never teached Siu Lim Tau- Chum Kiu-Biu Chi, but the followers of Fong Shil Ching teach it. I don´t like to judge another styles history, but I think the article is not right here in the weng chun part of the forum. The article should be in the southern shaolin part of the forum.

OOOOHHH NO YA DON'T !!!
You keep that stuff over here, Andreas! Don't go dropping it off at our doorstep like an abandoned child! Boy, I bet ya don't wipe your feet when you walk in either!!! LOL! I'm just kidding with you. But isn't it funny how every once in a while, some group tries to establish themsleves, and in order to establish credibility, they knock other styles. I seem to remember a certain Sifu who claimed that his version was the real deal, while all others were simply a watered down 'modified' method, or another claiming his iron palm was superior, and that others were from peasant styles.
Then there are the guys who develop a reputation by putting out good, solid, informative articles. People like Adam Hsu, Yang Jwing-Ming, Doc Fai-Wong, George Xu, Robert Chu, and yourself come to mind. More info, less ego.
At this point, as soon as one of these people surface with these kind of stories, it raises a red flag. It almost always means some kind of bulls*** i Too bad more people can't be like you, Andreas. Just put their art out there and share with the public.
my two cents.
