Below are some members' commentaries for this October 2005 Hung Fa Yi Workshop. Others in attendance, feel free to post your review on this thread.

My impression of the HFY Public Seminar
Previously, my understanding of Kiu Sau and Chi Sau timeframes was cloudy. I understand the fundamentals of the Fau Kiu Kiu Sau, and very little of Chi Sau.

This weekend I got a better understanding of the timeframes and technology involved in Kiu Sau. I enjoy the time we spend with Grandmaster Gee, and envy the San Fransisco students for the close contact they have.

I liked all the in depth information on all the subjects and I liked the hand to hand interaction following them. I now have a better view of Kiu Sau as opposed to Chi Sau and all things that apply to both.

Putting Grandmaster Gee's explanations on paper like he did, better helped me to understand it as well. Thanks to all who came and taught at the seminar.

The main advantage/benefit for attending was an understanding of a concept taken from beginning to end. Attending this workshop feels like three weeks of one hour classes compressed into the weekend.

Other items learned - better body structure, positioning, and understanding how some of the class exercises support specific techniques.

It was a great priviledge to meet and spend time with GM Gee and Master Meng. I look forward to practicing and perfecting what was taught.

The Phoenix workshop by Sigung Gee gave a great depth of information regarding Kiu Sau. Preliminary (prerequisite) drilling cover several aspects of proper Tin Yan Dei structure that helped me a lot.

The real treat of the weekend for me, however, was the new Kiu Sau material: Saam Sing Jong. It was a wealth of information on how to properly cross your opponent's center (going from one Jeui Ying position to another). It was beautiful to see how the 3 Gahn Sau (high, low, and centerline) were used to express proper range and two-line defense. The application of this information to Chin Na/Anti-Chin Na was also great to see.

In terms of workshop format, I liked the fact that we had plently of practice time throughout the two days. I am looking forward to the next workshop!

This weekend introducing noth Saan Sau as well as system approach to the Kiu Sau has once again sent a paradigm shift through my mind and body. Over these past two days I was able to clearly see the 3 different timeframes of Kiu Sau, Chi Kiu and Chi Sau. Although Chi Kiu and Chi Sau was not introduced through the system this weekend, all the basic details of Kiu Sau was both explained and shown in a fashion for me, as a continuous learner, to relate my own body to time, space, and energy when applying Kiu Sau as shown.

This new introduction to the 3 Star Concept, in its own timeframe, helped me to better relate Kiu Sau from what I originally believed Kiu Sau was. I have to thank Sitaigung Gee for the patience to teach us and to express and enforce the system approach. I look forward to training Kiu Sau and much more as I am able and allowed.

This workshop put into perspective for me the correct timeframe for using Kiu Sau, Chi Kiu and Chi Sau. Understanding proper space and time for the different Bong Sau (Hok Bong Sau and Yeen Bong Sau) was quite an eye opener. Using low, high, and centerline Gahn Sau to deal with "outside the box" has given us new tools, with the variation of its expression in the third section of HFY SNT form. The workshop was very educational and very well delivered.

Thank you Grandmaster Gee.

Thank you for coming to AZ and giving this seminar. It has improved my understanding of these timeframes greatly. Thisi s the third or fourth seminar I have attended, and I'm fairly sure I have benefitted the most from this one. This is because of the topics covered and today and yesterday, and because I've had more previous training before this seminar than between the ones I've attended in the past.

Before this weekend's seminar I had only limited technical knowledge of the Kiu Sau, Chi Kiu, and Chi Sau timeframes. Yesterday and today I've absorbed a lot more detail of the individual techniques; how they differ per timeframe, a better understanding of ON/OFF energy concepts, and an overall better idea of how particular structures are catagorized as appropriate by distances, usage, etc...

This material was very impressive because of the sheer depth of detail, and will keep me and my peers busy because it obviously cannot be practiced alone.

Looking forward as alwats to the next seminar, and thank you all again.

Kiu Sau - Chi Kiu - Chi Sau Seminar

It is very exciting to learn more information regarding the Kiu Sau concepts. The philosophy of Kiu Sau regarding inside and outside the box. Inside the box is me, and outside the box is the world. The three Gahn's really puts a new focus into bridging.

The low Gahn Sau, the high Gahn Sau, and the Centerline Gahn Sau forces us to review Risk Management when crossing the Centerline. Kiu Sau (forearm) is where we make contact with our partner/opponent and the proper use of line and energy allows us to reduce our risk of getting hit.

The seminar has been very educational. I look forward to drilling these concepts and the new drills designed to strengthen their use.

Sitaigung, thank you for sharing.

I think the seminar was taught very well. Grandmaster Gee explained the material on Kiu Sau, Chi Kiu, and Chi Sau in an excellent progression; first with the origin of Kiu Sau and how that relates to Chi Sau. He explained that they are two different timeframes and have two different purposes. The prerequisites for the 3 Star Concept were discussed and practiced. Then the hi, low, and centerline Gahn Sau were discussed and practiced.

As a beginner I was able to understand the concepts with a little help from my kung fu brothers. The only spot I got confused was the concept on 2-Line defense (only because it wasn't explained).

This weekend's workshop illustrated once again how the factors of time space and energy are the driving force behind the principles of Wing Chun. It can be demonstratively proven that no technique can exist (work) or be explained without first understanding the factors of time, space and energy. The depth of this statement was explored in detail through the practice of HFY Chi Sau rolling/crossing platforms focusing on the concept Saam Sing Jong and utilizing the Gahn Sau techinque. Gahn Sau was shown to have varying time and space considerations and different energies all directing the proper use of Gahn Sau in separate timeframes referred to as High Gahn, Low Gahn and Centerline Gahn.

Focusing on one technique learning it's particular characteristics really allows the Wing Chun practitioner to appreciate the depth of knowledge that make WCK a principle based science as opposed to just a collection of various techniques. I would like to once again praise the Shaolin Warrior Monks who devised this system, and thank Grandmaster Garrett Gee for preserving such a beautiful treasure.

The seminar topic was the different identities and relationships of the HFY Chi Sau rolling platforms of Kiu Sau, Chi Kiu and Chi Sau. GM Gee started with a talk on the history and develoment of Chi Sau and explained that Kiu Sau pre-dates Chi Sau. We then focused on the Kiu Sau platform and fruther made a separation between short range and long range with the 3 Star Concept and 4 1/2 Concept. Using the SMK/Saan Sau approach, the participants were introduced to the basic motions of the drills to be used to illustrate the 3 Star Concept. Then using the system approach, the 3 concepts were explored using low, high, and centerline Gahn Sau. This gave the instructor candidates a valuable insight into the two approaches of teaching the material.

As always I feel priviledged to take part in and receive the quality of instruction that GM Gee is willing to share to both members and general public at these events.

Hello all,
Before my small dissertation of this past weekend, I would like to send my deepest gratitude towards GM Gee for sharing another layer of the onion. I wish I could express more of a thank but I feel that words do not do the experience any sort of justice only my action.
This seminar was an indescribable experience, which took one through the KSSMJconcept layer of kiu sau and as it defined a big picture of KS and its nature, and how it differs from chi sau. I felt that the information presented gave all in attendance (speaking for myself) a new view of ones kiu within T, S, & E, physically, mentally and spiritually. I realized at the end of the last night, that no stone was left unturned in my mind. This has been a WOW of an experience in my life time. Again!
Thanks to everyone in attendance, the energies that were shared created a pleasant environment to train.

Still digesting, James

To me this workshop was another important, historical HFY event. Sifu continues to reveal the System Approach of HFY, which was never done before in previous generations. This workshop marks the 3rd such experience.

I would like to say thanks again to our wonderful host, Sifu Richard, and it is always good to see my brothers from San Francisco.

I’m currently working on my technical notes from the workshop this week and I’ll get them up soon.
