Sifu Loewenhagen conducted a 6 hour seminar covering the first two levels of Kiu Sau in Hung Fa Yi; Fau Kiu Kiu Sau and Deui Yeng Kiu Sau. Also we experimented with the mechanics of Bong Laap Kiu Sau. What I gained from the workshop was a clearer understanding of the proper time to "face shadow" or to "face center".
This I found to be an immensely invalueable tool to identify, as it seems to come back to the focus on protecting my Saam Dim Yaht Sien (vertical posture) at all times. Mo Ying Da Yeng and Yau Ying Da Ying truly help in knowing that when you do not own the center "real estate", you cannot face up to it. You can only present the shadow area to them. When you do own the center line and all the correct pieces are in place, you have the capacity to stay on the centerline (Yau Ying) and enter the chasing and persuing timeframe.
To me, it seems most appropriate to train Fau Kiu Kiu Sau (wandering arm methods) up front as it aides in teaching us how to gain proper shape from a state of no shape. In other words, when you aren't in a position to defend, you learn how to get into a position to do so as well as how to maintain your structures. Striking was not at all a focus; more so we seemed to have grasped the idea about self-preservation. Risk Management for combat!
I observed that although it was difficult for some people to get accustomed to the footwork of Bin Ma, and even aligning their Gahn Sau to the shadow without looking, the idea was understood enough to appreciate the level of urgency in each progression on top of recognizing the proper position in space to be at when facing shadow.
Many of the drills we went through involved blindfolded Kiu Sau, which helped us focus on using more of our other senses rather than our eyes. The effect was truly inviting as people began to respond more to energy and time in the attempts to gain good space.
Overall I thought it was WELL worth the experience, time and effort that Sifu presented to us. I certainly gained much in this seminar and look forward to many more. Thank you Sifu for your guidance and care in our kung fu life. Thanks also to Sitaigung, as we would not be where we are today, nor would any of this have been possible if it were not for him!
