1) Event Name
A workshop in two parts: Shaolin and Wing Chun - what's the connection?
(sponsored by the Ving Tsun Museum, featuring Curator Benny Meng)

2) Description of Event

Part 1: Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun in relation to the Southern Shaolin Temple & the differences between Revolutionary Society Wing Chun and Red Boat Opera Wing Chun

The first part of this workshop will be a technical discussion on the Southern Shaolin Temple, the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun system, Revolutionary Society Wing Chun and Red Boat Opera Wing chun. This workshop will touch on areas of history, philosohpy, and technical knowledge seldom discussed in the public as well as give participants a solid foundation in what constitudes the foundation of Southern Shaolin. Coming away from this workshop, you will have a new appreciation of just how far, wide, and deep the wisdom of Hung Fa Yi Shaolin Wing Chun reaches.

Here's what some of Master Meng's previous workshop participants have to say about his lectures:

I continue to be impressed with the material at even the basic levels. I have a karate background of Kenpo and nothing in my previous experience comes close to this. It is always a pleasure to work with my Sigung. I look forward to many more seminars.

I can’t express how much I enjoyed your seminar. It thought it was awesome; you really went in-depth with some of the moves we have learned. Also, I really liked how you compared some of the philosophies and concepts with life and not just a martial arts perspective. I think you did a good job with evenly distributing the time we got for physical activity along with the speeches and in-depth looks at some of the philosophies and applications.

Personally, I really liked when you talked about some other martial art styles and what really makes them a style rather than a system or science. I also really enjoyed the look at Saam Mo Kiu philosophy and you really did give me a new perspective of looking at reality. All in all I thought it was awesome and I look forward to coming to another one of your seminars, Master Meng.

Thank you,

For me the workshop helped me to better understand how important it is for me to open up the way that I think. How everything that I do must have or come from a solid foundation. It has made me rethink some of the principles that I am living by. Do I really, really believe in them? Am I willing to whole-heartedly commit to them? Do I need to change (and to question) what I believe? Master Meng did a great job of giving me a greater foundation. I’m looking forward to the next time.

Part 2: Chan, Health, and Combat - Hung Fa Yi the Complete System
The second part of this workshop will be hands-on and interactive. You will learn exercises to cultivate your health, sense of reality and self-defense skills. You'll see how Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun addresses all combat ranges as well as cultivates clearer awareness of reality and improves health.

You should expect to come away with a good workout for the body and an even better workout for the mind and attitude, seeing how the physical exercises directly connect to your experience of reality.

Here's what some of Master Meng's previous workshop participants have to say about this hands-on training:

First off, this was a great experience for me both mentally and physically. Despite being a beginner and less experienced than some of the other participants everyone helped me grow and learn. In fact, the great advantage to being lower level is the number of eager higher level students willing to help me learn the techniques.

The structure of the seminar was very well planned out. Lecture combined with hands-on exercise really helped me understand the techniques both mentally and physically. I feel that I learned and absorbed a great deal of valuable information this weekend that gives me a anew perspective on my training. Thank you for the wealth of knowledge, Master Meng. I look forward to your next visit.

I thoroughly enjoyed this weekend’s seminar. It showed me that many style possibilities the human body holds. And the way in which presented the knowledge helped me to understand each layer you added. I did not feel overwhelmed with the knowledge you gave, it was easily relatable to my previous JKD and Wing Chun experience.

I hope at some point in the next few years I would love to come to Dayton and train for a few months so that I could help supplement my growing love for the martial arts. Please come back next year and share more knowledge of the beautiful are of Hung Fa Yi. And my beautiful, I mean y its simplicity, directness, and efficiency.

My first conception about martial arts was changed when I read “Zen in the Martial Arts.” However, you have revolutionized my mind with your teaching during the weekend of August 13th and 14th, 2005. Thank you for sharing your hard & dedicated work with me. I look forward to you coming to Kansas City again and sharing your wisdom.

Sincerely,

I have enjoyed my visit very much. The seminar was helpful, yet humbling. I have learned a lot, but I feel that I’ve only scratched the surface. Your students have been very patient and helpful. I look forward to continuing my learning.

Thank you very much Master Meng. I have always found your seminars informative, enlightening and constructive. This is my 3rd time in attendance and I feel as though this seminar has been beneficial, exciting, and fresh as well as informative, enlightening, and constructive. Great Job. Thank you again. You combined hands-on and demonstrative teachings have helped me take another step in the right direction. You is the best.

As a very young JKD/Wing Chun student, less than a year, this weekend has helped to answer the questions that have been plaguing my study. “What do we do this?” “What comes from this type of response, when it fees unnatural?” Your explanations feel like a spotlight on my questions that I have had. Everything that was laid out made a connection with my internal and external sense of self. I feel that this will greatly expand my ability to create a better understanding of myself with my study. Thank you for your time, space and energy.

jKD student

I enjoyed this experience. The total connection of all of the drills all the way through was a good method. The level of detail given was good. I find myself still gaining deeper knowledge through focusing on the concepts in the drills. I had a great experience with Chi Sau as I saw my Kiu Sao training came into play.
