Based on the VTM's research, Yim Wing Chun is only a legend and not a real person. If this is the case, why do so many Wing Chun lineages use the legend as history? When there is a need to maintain a low profile myth, legend, and rumor easily run rampant. The Five Elders in Wing Chun legend comes from the Secret Societies while the story of Yim Wing Chun was borrowed from Fukien White Crane. The phrase, “Yim Wing Chun” was a code phrase from the revolutionary societies, also referred to as secret societies. As a matter of fact, there are many lineages of Wing Chun that do not use Yim Wing Chun as the founder of the system. Those systems include Hung Fa Yi, Pan Nam, and Pao Fa Lin.
Pao Fa Lin and Hung Fa Yi share an interesting background because the recognizable Grand Masters of the past were secret society leaders. Daai Dung Fung is the earliest name in the Pao Fa Lin lineage. He was not an Opera member but was a contemporary of Hung Gun Biu, who was connected to the Hung Fa Yi lineage. Because of Pao Fa Lin’s historical background, most of the Sifu, Masters, and Grand Masters are not too well known in the public. Hopefully, through this forum, we can generate interest and help to preserve this lineage of Wing Chun.
