View Full Version : Time, Space, and Energy

My understanding of time, space, and energy from the first level Hung Fa Yi perspective starts with understanding the three individually. Second is, how do I see them as a whole? Next, I look at the whole within a combat scenario. Lastly, time space and energy from a philosophical view.
Time is how long X takes to travel the distance from position A to position B. This is also a period or moment in time. For example, how fast can the weapon reach me? Or how much time does X (the weapon) have to move from A (Opponent) to B (Self). This is a question about a moment or period within combat. This time can also be seen as reactionary time. How fast can I react to this weapon coming at me? To further understand time we need to look at space.
Space can be seen as the distance to target, or the shared distance with an opponent. It can also be looked at from a self-awareness angle. First look at it from a distance to target standpoint, you could refer to this distance as range, because it is being looked at as if the target is stationary. Since all or most opponents try to move away, the range can change. If I look at it through the “shared distance with the opponent”, I have incorporated the possible change in range, and then we look at it from a self-awareness angle. If my body geometries are correct, I have set my self in an advantageous position, and understand now how space is shared in the beginning of any given scenario. But to truly understand, one must add together the time and space to understand the set up point. You put yourself in the most efficient space and time to deal with the energies to come. Now you have used a first level HFY knowledge of space, and time to control an opponent, giving you the time to deal with the weapon. I will explain more when we talk about combat.
Lets look at energy as what is used to deploy a weapon. Energy of course, can be looked at from different levels depending on your experiences with Chan. Energy governs time within the space or more easily said, that a weapon will go from point A to point B in X amount of time. Lets take the main two energies, which are hard (fire), and soft (water), and apply them to time and space as we venture towards the idea of how they exist together.
Within space exists time. Both, time and space are governed by the energy factor. If space changes then time must also change which means more energy. If the energy that is used within a certain distance is increased or decreased, then the time is changed, giving more or less space to understand. If space is increased then time of travel has increased and that means more energy must be applied to cover the distance. If space decreases then there is less time to react to energies applied. Lets take this to a combat level of understanding.
My understanding of time, space, and energy from a philosophical point of view is seeing reality as a given moment of truth within a point in space governed by the energy of the universe. Also, this energy of the universe is what supplies all living things. With the awareness of these three points you should be able to understand the here and now. You cannot live in the past because the time, space, and energies are dead or have already passed. It's a way of saying that you learn from the past. You should try not to expect thing of the future for the future can be altered by space or energy. This could go on for ever but then I would not be here right now. I would love to hear your views on the philosophies of time, space and energies or time and space in general.

Hi James,

Time, space and energy are the factors used to define universal truth. When we study HFY is our goal the pursuit of precise combat applications or a weng kiu understanding of truth as is pertains to our present state of being.

Waz up T,
I understand that T, S,and E combined exist within life, truly reality is the truth. I see that TS&E are what govern true reality. Am I close? So whether it's combat or community, to see through T,S,&E isn't easy. I still try!

Heya James,
I think we are all on the right path and I think we are all getting closer. Isn't the formula expressing TS&E and isn't TS&E the equivalent of the formula?

I'm not sure that I know what you mean. In a way I see the formula as personal T,S "Know your self". I also see it as beyond self " know your opponent". I agree with you and feel we all are on the path of truth. You know, Sum Mo Kiu.

Yes I agree this is a wonderful journey we are on and there just seem to be exceptional people all around. when you are expressing the formula what are you really expressing? Can you see the role of each factor in the symbolism or expression of the formula?

good stuff but lets not take this past the first level for sake of the post. From a level 1 perspective of the formula is to describe the box. Ultimately I see the formula as the foundation of San Sau training With the HFY skill drills. do I see the formula as I move? No, Sometimes, I am more of the type to understand it in body, then mind, but always guided by spirit. After a kuen faat moment I relate back and yes then I do the formula and where I lost it. Does that make any sense?

Jumping into this thread....

Isn't the formula expressing TS&E and isn't TS&E the equivalent of the formula

I don't think this is quite complete... or the statement is making a fundamental assumption that is useful to point out to students: The formula is expressing TS&E for the human body. Thus, TS&E is not equivalent to the formula. TS&E is outside the formula. It exists on it's own. It's only when you have a human body that the Formula becomes relevant. If you were a squid, you're formula for maximum efficient in TS&E would be different than the HFY Wing Chun Formula.

When we talk about “the box” I think of it as

first, the box is, to me, like a table, supported by 4 legs. The four legs are the four martial arts activities: health/fitness, sport/competition, art/entertainment, science of self-defense/combat.

then, a box with four edges: time, space, energy and the human body (this is reality)

then, inside the box, there are the four ranges of combat (this is combat reality)

then, at the middle of the box, is the formula existing at the short striking/trapping range (this is combat efficiency)

Now, if we want to talk about training and expressing the formula, I have to be in the right range of combat myself to express it. If I’m in a three-gate posture, the formula doesn’t exist for me from a structural point of view but it does exist for me in a conceptual point of view.

Just my thoughts reading through ya’ll’s conversations…

Sisuk,
I guess that I should of been more careful of my wording. I should of been more specific of wwhich angle I was coming from.
Thank you,
James

Very good observations, Jeremy.

Again- this reminds me that TSE is not static...it's always changing...it's always never the same.
