Hi everyone,
Our school uses the theory of coverage as one of the driving criteria to apply the elements of the forms in combat. Here is my SiFu explaining this theory (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wktuTZc6y5I) using Pak Sau and Kwan Sau to illustrate the concept.
Enjoy,
Marcus

Sauchi,
I hope you found the video informative. If you have any questions, just ask and I'll try to answer you. We believe in sharing information about our different approaches to Wing Chun. Our school is open to all branches and families of Wing Chun Kung Fu.
If you insist on sending money somewhere, please consider supporting F.A.I.R (http://www.fair.org/index.php?page=139), a wonderful organization. ;)

Marcus,
Hello and welcome to the forum, could you provide me with your own definition of coverage after watching the video a seed has been planted but left wondering if you can answer this from an insider perspective so to speak. Thanks

Hi Anthony,
Thanks for the welcome.
The art of covering involves knowing what gates are exposed and more importantly understanding the proper application of Wing Chun theory to close or remove them pre-emptively. It is trained in the forms, Chi sau, and lap sau, Live dummy drills and with partner drills with some equipment. Each movement in the form has an aspect of coverage, like the 2nd Tan Sau which covers your upper gate applied by pushing your hand out like a shield, and the 3rd Tan Sau which covers your upper area in a whipping motion from top to bottom.
Coverage allows you to be one step ahead of your opponent because you're not reacting and it simplifies your movements. In the video, my SiFu demonstrates how different attacks (thru the same gate) can be "covered" by the same hand movement (kwan sau in that example)
Duncan Leung SiFu, has a number of threads on his messageboard that discusses covering. This is a good starting point (http://www.wingchunkungfu.cn/mb/index.php?task=view&tid=218&page=4)
Hope that helped.

Thank you for the reply. Moving further into the discussion curious if there is a universal chinese term that others might recognize this principle by? Secondly can you explain the principle such as if the opponent comes in upper left gate with a round punch the rule of thumb on how to best defeat it is too ___________? and we know this because ______________?
