1. What does the phrase "kung fu" mean?
"kung fu" basically means skill and ability developed through hard work over time. This phrase does not apply to the martial arts only; it applies to anything that requires skill. For example, take jewelry-making, it is a skill that requires hard work and is developed over time.
2. Is Wushu/Mou Seut a style of martial arts?
Wushu is not really a specific style of martial art. Wushu simply means a "military art." Wushu initially was used for self-defense and for survival needs. As time passed , many people developed wushu diffrently. Wushu involves fist fights, weapon fights, kicking, hitting, catching, throwing, pouncing, pushing, and bumping. Wushu was not only used for self-defense but also to cure illness and to cultivate human potential.
3. What is a "sifu" and a "simo"? who is your sifu and simo?
A "sifu" is a father/teacher and my sifu is Master Benny Meng. A "simo" is a mother/teacher and my simo is Mrs. Meng.
4. What is the gate theory in relationship to Heaven, Human, and Earth concept?
There are six gates in the gate theory. The gates primarily represent the areas of attack and defense with relation to dimensions of space and time. The heaven gate involves the upper reference points on the body involving the head; the human gate refers to the middle reference point involving the trunk and arms and the earth gate represents the lower reference points involving the lower limbs.
5. What is the difference between "sik" and "ying"? Use shapes and techniques to answer this question.
These are two wisdoms. Sik refers to tool and techniques -- kicking, punching, grabbing, etc.; generally, it means the way things look. Ying refers to shapes and body mechanics -- the way you punch, kick, grab, etc. Ying determines the quality of the technique and it is something that must be learned.
