1. List the Four Martial Art Activities. Is one activity better that the others? If yes, what defines better? If no, why?

A. Health/Fitness
B. Art/Entertainment
C. Sports/Games
D. Combat/Self-defence

No one activity is better than the other. They all have their times and places.
They all have advantages and benefits. Regardless of the specific interest of the
participant, everyone will gain the residual benefit of health, fitness and knowledge.

2. What is the reality of self-defense and combat?

Self-defense and combat cannot be considered the same as fitness, sports, or entertainment. You must know reality and not illusion with reality being maximum efficiency. A combat/self-defense system must be complete and cover all ranges.

3. List the Four Ranges of combat. Is one range better than the other? If yes, what defines better? If no, why not?

A. Kicking
B. Striking
C. Trapping
D. Grappling

No range is better than the other. They all have their times and places. All have advantages and disadvantages. The best range is dictated by the time, space and energy of the fighter and the opponent.

4. What is Heaven, Human, and Earth in relationship to Self-defense?

Heaven, Human, and Earth relate to self-defense in regards to the four ranges of combat and body postures. Heaven refers the upper-reference point and the long-kicking, long striking range i.e., thrusting kick, jab, cross, spear hand. Human refers to the middle- reference point and the trapping range i.e., low heel kick, palm-heel strikes, elbows. Earth refers to the lower- reference point and the grappling range i.e., anti-takedown techniques.

5. What is the Space/Time/Energy Paradigm?

The Space/Time/Energy paradigm is based on three dimensional space and the fourth demension of time. In order to create a system that would counter all other fighting styles the Shaolin monks and the disposed military leaders
collaborated to develope a system based on the science of battlefield space, time, and energy management. It resulted in a shift from Martial art to Martial science, as a science it is exact. Nothing can be added or substracted, it is totally complete.

6. Briefly describe the Saam Mo Kiu (Three Connecting Bridge) and relate it to something in day-to-day life.

Saam Mo Kiu refers to three time frames:

1. Fau Kiu - confusion and wandering stage
2. Saan kiu- awareness stage
3. Weng Kiu - focus stage

Saam Mo Kiu relates to day-to-day life in the work force.

You start a new job not knowing where things are located, who people
are, what functions they perform, on probation. You are in the Fau Kiu stage.
After a few months, you know where everything is, who all the people are, you know who performs what functions. You are in the Saan Kiu stage. After several
years you are promoted to supervisor or a department head, You are now in the Weng Kiu stage (hopefully).

7. What is body methods? Why is it important?

Body methods basic movements in self-defense:

1. Up
2. Down
3. Forward
4. Backward
5.Turning/Twisting

They are important because they generate power.

8. What is your current focus in training? What do you like and dislike in realms of teaching and training methods?

My current focus is maximum efficiency in Hung Fa Yi and life. I enjoy taking the concepts and principles taught in Hung fa Yi and applying them in my day-to-day
activites. They help me to put things in perspective for as what is real and what is illusion. Sifu Ryan keeps class interesting often introducing to new things and
scenarios. The seminars are always enlightening.

First Grade Written Questions

1. List the Four Martial Art Activities. Is one activity better than the others? If yes, what defines better? If no, why?
a. Health and Fitness
b. Sport (tournament)
c. Art and Entertainment (Wushu, movies)
d. Combat and Self Defense
No activity is better than the other; it just depends on the individuals focus and understanding. Ex. Someone studying for health and fitness should not expect to be able to enter combat. But, someone that is studying for combat could entertain, enter tournaments and will receive health benefits.

2. What is the reality of self-defense and combat?
See example above: training for fitness/sport/entertainment will not prepare you for combat and self defense. Winning tournaments will only give one the illusion that they are prepared for actual self-defense and combat. Furthermore—only true combat is only found in the actual conflict. Sparring and flow are ways to train skills in preparation that they will come out in combat.

3. List the Four Ranges of Combat. Is one range better than the others? If yes, what defines better? If no, why not?
a. Long kicking range (back leg = most distance—rear thrusting kick)
b. Long striking range (snapping kick, jab/cross, biu-sau)
c. Trapping range (elbows, cat washing face, low heal kick)
d. Grappling range (clench/ground)
Each range has its own specific tools and postures making it unique to that space. A wing chun punch is superior when in a human posture at trapping range over a jab, but a jab is superior if the opponent is at a further distance in a heaven posture.

4. What is Heaven, Human, and Earth in relationship to self-defense?
These terms have multiple meanings in self-defense.
In a horizontal space, heaven would be a more distant range and the heaven posture would be a three gate, mobile on the balls of the foot set up. Human would define the trapping range where one can touch the opponent with three limbs and perform simultaneous attack/defend. The human posture is a six gate position that is less mobile and powerful than heaven but gives one more speed, tools and options due to the close proximity. Earth would define the grappling range where opponents clutch each other and take each other to the ground. Mobility is the least in the earth posture.
Vertically, heaven, human and earth would refer to the range by the face (heaven), in front of the torso (human) and the groin down (earth). Heaven/Human/Earth awareness is mention often meaning to make sure you are thinking about and fully protecting those areas of the body.

5. What is the Space/Time/Energy Paradigm?
The space/time/energy paradigm was developed in the 1600’s when the monks shifted their technique philosophy from personal preference to universal truths. In HFY efficiency is emphasized and the only way to achieve maximum efficiency is to use the proper technique dictated by science—the time, space and energy.

6. Briefly describe the Saam Mo Kiu and relate it to something in day-to-day life.
Translation—three connecting bridges
a. Fau Kiu—“floating bridge” a wandering state—no reference to time/space/energy
b. Saan Kiu—“separate bridge” awareness state but cannot harmonize time/space/energy
c. Wing Kiu—“everlasting bridge” a focus state—achieving harmony of time/space/energy.
Just the other day I realized that I was using Saam Mo Kiu in my music teaching. As the students started playing their instruments, many for the first time since summer, I was letting them wander on scale techniques, to see what they knew. Then over the next few days I gave them more information and started bringing them to an early Saan Kiu stage. I will most likely bring them quite a way through this stage but not into Wing Kiu. Only those students who then are studying privately and will take music through an undergrad degree will actually get to a Wing Kiu stage. Many of them speak Cantonese so I was going to ask them if they knew what the terms meant but I didn’t.

7. What is body method? Why is it important?
A body method is use of the body to control the limbs to maximize power. HFY teaches five methods—up/down/front/back/rotation. A complete technique will encompass all. Daniel showed us the rear thrusting heel kick, starting from the back, moving forward which creates a slight down motion then delivering the kick with a slight rising and rotation. I had never thought of this in that much detail before.

8. What is your current focus in training? What do you like and dislike in realms of teaching and training methods?
I am really trying to properly learn the techniques being taught. I have a great desire to move into the formula and the level three materials. Therefore I am also working on patience. Having trained prior at another facility I am aware about not integrating other techniques, as tempting as adding a side kick into the mix may be. I know that these techniques need to be solid and that I also need to increase my upper body strength in general. I really enjoy the classes and most importantly the content. Both Sifu Ryan and Sihing Daniel are excellent and my kung fu brothers are a blast to be around and train with. I left a trial at another school, which I was at for two months, because I felt there was a lack of a long term vision, structured classes, and the “why” behind the techniques. Although I liked the head instructor, adult students and the fact that I could walk to the school, I felt I needed to try something else to make sure I knew what I wanted. I am so elated that I found this school! I enjoy knowing the why and how and having Sigung Meng come and visit are just wonderful experiences. Even taking this test shows how serious the HFY community is about making sure everyone understands the material. I find myself thinking about the philosophy from the school at work and in life and can feel shifts in my own attitude. I tell friends that I am not just taking Kung Fu but am at a Kung Fu School that embraces history, philosophy, and respect, not just the fist.

Written Test Questions
By Cristian Morales

1) List the Four Martial Art Activities. Is one activity better than the others? If yes, what defines better? If no, why?

The martial art activities are:
• Health and Fitness
• Sports or Competitions
• Entertainment
• Self defense
No there is no such one activity better than others because each person who decides to enroll in the path of martial arts has a different purpose or a different goal, making it subjective to each other’s view. This also depends on the maturity of the practitioner; never the less the view might change while the path of the martial art is being walked.
Although practicing Self Defense, if the purpose of enrolling in a martial art is to learn how to defend yourself, you would also be gaining the other mentioned three. This is because from a self defense perspective you would be learning how to educate your body to keep it fit, and by default that would make it healthy. Also as long as you advance in your knowledge you would be preparing yourself for a real life challenge which these days fighting tournaments are taking a big leading edge on sports. And in your preparation of your martial art, after a path of dedication and sacrifice, it is feasible that you can be capable of performing for the public certain techniques and applications for exhibitions in a margin of your physical capabilities.

2)What is the reality of self-defense and combat?
3) List the Four Ranges of Combat. Is one better than the others? If yes, what defines better? If not, why? (Questions 2 & 3 were answere together

The truth is that these days are not as aggressive as it used to be when honor and survival was settled in the battle field. These days the fight is more mental than physical - these days the practice of martial arts is based on some subtle peace of mind and confidence where you feel prepared to face some hostile situation, and from there it takes all the different paths mentioned above. However, in a hostile situation where combat is required for “survival” we talk about:
•Long kicking range: where our body is allowed to reach the opponent with our longest movement of the limb - as a back leg can strike due to the extension of itself and the body’s natural moves or mechanics that allows it cover longer distance in order to perform an attack. Good things about this are the mobility that we can have from this position, the power that it can be generated based on the distance and the acceleration that we give to that limb. It is important to mention that this position of combat is considered a “one sider” due to the posture of the body that naturally adopts to perform the move to reach maximum reach and strength.
•Long striking range: is very similar to the description above. The only difference lays on the way that we use the limbs to execute our attack - using body limbs would be any kick performed with the front leg, or any type of punch used to strike (jab, jab cross). At this position we can strike the opponent with full power, but not at the same distance (even though it is used for long reach) as a long type of kick. Disadvantages of this position of combat can apply as well to the long kicking range needed, such as limited use of tools for combat. It is also more of a reactive situation than proactive, because only one - an attack or a block - can be preformed at one time. And in my personal view, when this position is very powerful I believe that excessive power, lack of control, and to not have control of your attack or defense, can be more harmful to yourself and an advantage to your opponent.
•Trapping range: this is considered a position where you are allowed to touch your opponent with both hands and both legs. From this position we talk about full contact combat, where you maximize the use of your tools and the efficiency of your movements bloom. Here an attack and a defense can be preformed simultaneously, a position where there is no such thing as excessive contact because of its nature, and because the distance that it takes for you to receive or take a hit is so short it can be considered a disadvantage.
•Grappling: when we refer to a grappling situation we talk about controlling centers of gravity. From here the stimulation is given by manipulating the center of your opponent. At this range any type of hit that is given is not to knock out or really hurt your opponent. This is because the very small gap between the bodies disables the limbs from creating any motion big enough to cause severe damage. At this range we look for any type of submission by manipulating the limb against its natural movement or to project the opponent to the ground. I also agree that from a grappling situation a superior position can be gained where any limbs can be use to cause damage. However, the nature of grappling is to move the body from its center of gravity - not to hit. One of the biggest disadvantages at this range is the fact that you can not perceive or be aware of your surroundings while you are in a pinch, and these days’ fights are not as honorable as they use to be. Today combats take place among several participants, which makes it hard to keep control at this range when you are being challenged by a group.
Up to this point we conclude that there is no such thing as a better way to fight, neither better ranges, everything depends on the situation and the skills and limitations of your self to perform the most effective attack at the right moment - at the precise time and at the most convenient place. These ranges should be practiced for versatility of situations, however the ability to master any of these ranges would vary in different people, as well as the comfort of the skills adopted at the time and given by the practice of martial arts.

4) What is Heaven, Human, and Earth in relationship?

Heaven in my perspective is everything place on your body from the neck to the head. Human is from the neck to the hips, and Earth would be, in my perspective, from the hips to the ground.
Now, from a combat range:
Heaven: long kicking range and long striking range
Human: everything that has to do with in the trapping range.
Earth: would be considered into the grappling range.
From this Heaven, Human, and Earth perspective self defense can be categorized in the different stages of combat range. Lets mention that the intention of knowing the combats of range is to study the possibility of an attack. From this we can rationalize a self defense strategy to avoid any potential damage.

5) What is the Space/ Time/ Energy paradigm?

This triangle comes out of a philosophy where every single thing, the universe and the motion of nature occurs in a specific place with the precise energy at the right time, from here, every move, and every action is balanced by the moment, by the situation and by the energy that we face in life. This philosophical stand follows the paradigm of mind, body and spirit. It seeks for the right and precise balance of the situation and reactions that we would face, and the way that we react to them. This also applies to a self defense or combat mentality, where the moves that we execute have to be precisely chosen by the circumstance or situations you are exposed to, as does the correct amount of energy to harmonize with your opponent. Either to defend your self or to attack your opponent - always thinking to not disrupt your line .
From here, space, time and energy is the attitude that we adapt to circumstances of life - whether in a life or death situation, or in daily life with work or family. It is a philosophy that can be adopted in life. With this, we look to harmonize our situations with our circumstances, always seeking for efficiency in our decisions.

6) Briefly describe the Saam Mo Kiu (three connecting bridge) and related to something in day to day life.

The three connecting bridges can be defined as follows:
Fau Kiu: which describes any type of learning process, as the floating bridge where a stage of mind is set on wondering mode, where we start discovering the meaning or the natural movement of things. At this stage the mind is open to finding a rational explanation of patterns. At this stage our brain copies and adapts to the mechanics of the essentials. For example, a baby learning to walk, where he might struggle to give his steps, he is also building a pattern of motion in his brain that allowed it to balance and coordinate the movements.
Sam Kui: at this point some of awareness has been built, however that process has not stopped yet. It is also considered a separate bridge, where the situations become more familiar and adopting the knowledge would come easily to the understanding of the mind. At this point flow comes naturally, deeper, although when the execution of actions start raising, why and because start being common questions. Any type of advanced level in martial arts can be categorized in this layer. Any black-smith who starts understanding the art of his labor comes in place when the Fau Kiu level has been reached.
Wing Kui: translated to everlasting bridge, this stage comes in place once we have built a long path in our understanding. It is a stage of the mind where focus is peaked. Things flow naturally as part of karma, actions flow in harmony. This is the cusp of the mind, the body and the soul, where you have turned into an artist in what you do. At this point a Wing Kui person can be anybody with extensive studies or knowledge in a specific subject. Any person who has mastered his mind, however this requires a long path, dedication and patience. A Doctor with long years of study and devoted in his specialty can be in this type of bridge.

7) What is body method? Why is it important?

Body method is any type of movement made by the body that can create energy. It is important to have an understanding of this because in every single sport, activity or move, we should input methods with our body that allows the performance of an efficient action. This is because a correct body method can give more energy to the movement, and can help to complete a technique. Body methods can be from lifting a box to striking a wall.
There are different ways to produce energy with body methods - 5 to be precise: up, down, back, forth, and side to side. Here the rotational movement comes into place. By rotation of the hips or the shoulders, it allows you to increase the motion with a considerable amount of energy, being so important, especially for self-defense - allowing the body to produce more energy with out wasting what is being used.
Examples of body methods in applications are:
Up: uppercut, jumps.
Down: decedent hits or kicks, adopting a horse stand from a high stand.
Front: straight punches or kicks, steps, slides
back: back kicks, rear elbows
Side to side: any motion that it uses rotation of the hips, jab cross, round kicks,

8) What is your current focus in training? What do you like and dislike in realms of teaching and training methods?

My reason for enrollment in the Wing Chun was to find some harmony within my self, were my body can merge in a peaceful agreement with my mind, and where my soul can dictate the intensity of my life. Increasing will-power, self-esteem and humility are the paths to follow in my life. Pushing my body to the limit to create discipline, to know myself through the physical harmony of martial arts, has been the answer in order to reach my goals. In the mean time, the spiritual guidance to understand your equals through my body has given me a compassionate view of understanding the world.
In teaching methods I am very happy and proud to belong to the academy in Houston. I like the concept that through karma we create awareness, and through methodology based on a book as a guide, it gives the basic knowledge to fulfill a chronological path of learning. With guidance we can scale certain requirements to continuing the practice, always maintaining the standard. Meanwhile, this can be a disadvantage because even though it is good to follow standards to progress, it can also create inflexibility in the process of learning. Sticking to much to a book or what the student should be learning at that level is good, but it can also stop and unmotivated the student. Time and patience is good, that’s the way to perfection, but the student should be also challenge based on his capabilities of learning.

level one test
Level 1 Test
by Michael Welch

1) List the Four Martial Art Activities. Is one activity better than the others? If yes, what defines better? If no, why?

a)Health and Fitness
b)Sports and Games
c)Art and Entertainment
d)Combat and Self Defense
All activities are good when practiced separately depending on the martial artists goal. Practiced together however, they are very beneficial to a martial artist working on gaining a broader understanding of the martial arts.

2)What is the reality of self-defense and combat?

The health, sports and art aspects of martial arts are a great way to cultivate the skills and knowledge of martial arts, but when faced with combat these same mentioned aspects will not provide the needed reality.

3)List the Four Ranges of combat. Is one Range better then the others? If
yes, what defines better?if no, why not?

a)Kicking
b)Striking
c)Trapping
d)Grabbing or grapling
No one range is better. All four ranges of combat are useful. However, only if used in their proper time and space can they be effective.

4)What is Heaven, Human, and Earth in relationship to Self-Defense?

Heaven is a more mobile posture of long kicking and striking. The body is in a more side-ways stance called "three gate" where the shoulders will be facing the opponent and there is a lead hand for strikes and a lead leg for kicks. In this stance power can be generated from the rear hands and legs for rear strikes and kicks.

Human is a more straight facing upright posture using all the body's tools in a simultaneous offense and defence.

Earth describes the postures used in gaining or taking away space from the opponent by lowering your center of gravity. It may not be a very mobile posture but when used in certain circumstances is very effective.

5)What is the Space/time/Energy Paradigm?

It is a theory developed from a solid Saam Mo Kiu philosophy combined with looking at a four dimensional time and awareness that helps differentiate between reality and illusion in combat; the art in martial arts then becomes martial science.

6)Briefly describe the Saam Mo Kiu (Three Connecting Bridge) and relate
it to somthing in day-to-day life.

Fau Kiu - Confusion and wandering stage
Saan Kiu- Awareness stage
Weng Kiu- Focus stage
Fau Kiu is a stage when a person is unclear about the future and the goals to pursue.
Saan Kiu is a stage when a person emerges from the Fau Kiu stage and ideas about the future and goals become clear.
Weng Kiu is the stage that comes after Saan Kiu when a person has a clear understanding about their goals and puts them into action.

7)What is body method? Why is it important?

Up - down
Foward- backward
Rotation from side to side
It is an important foundation in everything you do because it provides mobility and energy.

8)what is your current focus in training? What do you like and dislike in
realms of teaching and training methods?

I intend to gain a better understanding and proficiency in the basics. I love everything about the training. There is nothing I dislike. My main goal is to go as far as Hung Fa Yi can take me.

There will be a more in depth paper given, as discussed with Sifu Ryan.

1. What does the phrase Kung Fu mean?

Skill and ability developed thru hard work over time.

2. Is Wushu/Mou Suet a style of martial arts?

Although perceived by many today as a style of martial arts, translated literally Wushu means martial arts.

3. What is a Sifu and a Simo? Who is yours?

Sifu means father or teacher. Simo is his non-practicing wife. My Sifu is Sifu Brad Ryan of Hung Fa Kwoon of Houston and his wife Julie Ryan.

4. What is gate theory in relationship to the heaven, human, earth concept?

Heaven, human, earth concept is the foundation for a 3-dimensional combat system. The six gate theory is a more detailed boundary of heaven, human, earth, taking into account the human anatomical structure in relationship to time ,space , and energy. The Wing Chun (HUng Fa Yi) formula.

5. What is the difference between Sik and Ying?

Sik meaning technique describes a surface level of understanding. For example, a heaven or long range fighter focusing on what long range kick or strike they might use on an opponent. Ying meaning shape or form (straight line, triangle, circle, half circle) describes a deeper level of understanding developing the entire body to engage an opponent in all ranges of combat.

6. What is inside the box training and outside the box training?

Outside the box training refers to a Saan Kiu level of awareness or training yet to have acheived maximum efficiency.
Inside the box training refers to a Wing Kiu level of awareness or training having acheived maximum efficiency displaying proper time, space, and energy.

7. What does a Black Sash or Black Belt represent in the martial arts community to you?

I feel a Black Sash/Belt repesents a higher level of understanding within a given martial arts system. I understand that different martial arts systems and individual schools may have different goals, criteria, and guidelines for their students to reach a Black Sash/Belt level within the focus of that schools given curriculum. A Black Sash/Belt should mean the foundation has been laid and that an individual has the necessary tools to find true enlightenment within their given art and themselves. With this enlightenment they should have a deeper understanding of the true nature of things in the world around them.

1. What are the Shaolin treasures?
Chan – the heart of all Shaolin Kung Fu development. Instant awakening, focus on the moment at hand, the here and now
Health – internal and external, physical and mental
Martial Arts – based on knowledge of self, attainment of reality
2. Describe the titles of 'Sigung' in Kung Fu culture. Who is the current successor of the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun system?

Sigung (cantonese) - your sifu's teacher or master.
Grandmaster Garrett Gee is the current successor of the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun system.

3. What is the school creed?

Harmony of body, mind and spirit.
Build true confidence thru knowledge in the mind, honesty in the heart, and strength in the body.
To keep friendship with one another and to build a strong and happy community.
To never fight to achieve selfish ends but to develop might for right.

4. What does 'Yi' mean?

Concept, understanding, intent

5. What does 'Kiu Sau' mean in Saan Kiu training?
Kiu Sau means bridge hand, and focuses on the area of the arm between wrist and elbow.

In terms of battle, Saan Kiu is the time (bridge) between being made aware of a threat (Fau Kiu), and being in total control of the situation (Weng Kiu). At this stage the need is to contain the imminent threat until the proper countermeasures reveal themselves.

In terms of Saan Kiu training, Kiu Sau relates to developing the sensitivity and structure that allows us to deal with (intercept or redirect) energy flows outside the box, i.e. before one is in the proper time and space to control (inside the box).

6. How many Kiu Sau concepts are contained in Saan Kiu training?

18

7. What is the Wing Chun formula and why it is important for Wing Chun?

One Line – Centerline - Core
Two Line Defense – Range, Depth
Three Reference Points – Height, Vertical
Five Line – Width
Six Gates
Five Elemental Battle Arrays

The Wing Chun formula is the scientific expression of time, space and energy thru the employment of the practitioner's own body parts as precision measurement devices. The culmination of centuries of interaction between the Shaolin priesthood and the military, it is the scientific underpinning of the simplest, most direct, and most efficient martial arts known to man.

8. What does Jong Sau mean and how does it lay the foundation for the Hung Fa Yi system?

Jong Sau, translated as structure hand, is the application of the Wing Chun formula – training proper upper body mechanics, stability and mobility as well as forward energy. As such it is somewhat of a misnomer, because hand, elbow, and arm structure and positioning are related to and dependent on foot, knee, and leg structure and positioning. Proper upper and lower body structure and positioning, in turn, is related to and dependent on the core (one-line), in other words, if your centerline is off, then so will the relationship between your arms and legs, elbows and knees.

1. What are the Shaolin treasures?

1) Chan philosophy
2) internal and external health development
3) and true martial skill based on the reality of combat and the removal of self-illusion

2. Describe the titles of 'Sigung' in Kung Fu culture. Who is the current successor of the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun system?

‘Sigung’ is your Sifu’s Sifu, or grandfather in Kung Fu culture. The current successor of the H.F.Y. system is Grandmaster Garrett Gee.

3. What is the school creed?

Harmony of Body, Mind and Spirit.
Build true confidence thru knowledge in the mind, honesty in the heart, and strength in the body.
To keep friendship with one another and to build a strong and happy community;
Never fight to achieve selfish ends but to develop might for right.

4. What does 'Yi' mean?

Yi is a one of 10 Shaolin Wisdoms and means concept/meaning.

5. What does 'Kiu Sau' mean in Saan Kiu training?

Kiu Sau means ‘bridge arm’ in Chinese and focuses on the area from the wrist to the elbow. In Saan Kiu training the purpose is to develop the ability to deal with energy outside the box, in terms of both delivery and response.

6. How many Kiu Sau concepts are contained in Saan Kiu training?

There are 18 Shaolin Kiu Sau methods.

7. What is the Wing Chun formula and why it is important for Wing Chun?

(1) the centerline – provides the core
(2) the two-line defense – identifies range
(3) the three reference points – identifies height
(5) the five-line concept – identifies width
(6) the six gates – established by previous four
(5) the five elemental battle arrays for facing and pursuit – gives practitioners the understanding of tactics and strategies for attack and defense

This formula is important for Wing Chun because the information is based on physics and physiology that provide a foundation grounded in reality (time, space, and energy), as opposed to subjective interpretations based on personal style and experience alone.

8. What does Jong Sau mean and how does it lay the foundation for the Hung Fa Yi system?

Jong Sau means ‘pillar/structure hand.’ The Jong Sau represents the Hung Fa Yi system because it stays true to the formula and has forward intent (energy). This forward intent is what Hung Fa Yi is about; never giving up your space but instead eating up your opponent’s. Sap Ming Dim is also expressed here with focus on the five-line concept, three reference points, and the two triangles employed in identifying the upper and lower locking positions on the centerline.

1. What are the Shaolin Treasures?
a) Chan: This is a philosophy stemming from ancient times. It is the belief that one should concentrate on the here and now and not focus on the past. Also included is the fact that one should take measures in the present in order to achieve one's future goals.
b) Health: The complete definition of health includes two aspects, external and internal. External health is physical training of the body whether it be conditioning, increasing strength, or endurance. Internal health is defined as training and focus of the mind and spirit through meditation and chi gong practices. Both are necessary to achieve harmony of the body, mind, and spirit.
c) Self-Defense: Here is where the training, mental attitude, and focus apply themselves to reality. It was the belief of the Shaolin monks that combat shows true reality by eliminating all pre-conceived fallacies or answering any questions one may have.

These treasures all go hand in hand with one another. Very similar to the four martial arts activities and ranges of combat, without one aspect it is impossible to truly understand the reality of combat and become an effective Kung Fu practitioner.

2. Describe the titles of 'Sigung' in Kung Fu culture. Who is the current successor of the Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun system?

3. What is the school creed?

Harmony of Body, Mind, and Spirit,
To build true confidence through knowledge in the mind, honesty in the heart, and strength in the body.
To keep friendship with one another and to build a strong and happy community.
Never fight to achieve selfish ends but to develop might for right.

4. What does 'Yi' mean?

Yi is meaning or concept. One example of this is the concept of Centerline, ones Centerline can represent center of gravity, maintaining an upright posture in all three dimensions, and the physical plane that divides one's body in half width wise. This is a concept because it can be applied to many different understandings including techniques, body movements, and alignments.

5. What does 'Kiu Sau' mean in the Saan Kiu training?

The translation of Kiu Sau is bridge hand; this term can be defined and used in a number of different ways. When defining Kiu Sau as it relates to Saan Kiu training one can think of the concept of going from nowhere to somewhere from a facing and alignment perspective. Kiu Sau allows a practitioner to bridge the gap between having a completely Fau Kiu facing (meaning not knowing where one's opponent is or how your structure relates to his) to having a Saan Kiu and ultimately Weng Kiu facing toward one's opponent (a Saan Kiu facing situation would be knowing where your opponent is and where you are in relation without exact proper alignments based on the Wing Chun Formula. A Weng Kiu facing would be proper time, space, and energy of one's self in relation to your opponent where the opponent is unable to challenge your superior position.).

6. How many Kiu Sau concepts are contained in Saan Kiu training?

Hung Fa Yi Wing Chun Kuen contains 18 different Kiu Sau concepts in Saan Kiu training.

7. What is the Wing Chun Formula (list the progression) and why it is important for Wing Chun?

1)Centerline: This includes maintaining one's center of balance, an upright posture, an even weight distribution, and an understanding of hand (wrist) position on the plane that evenly divides the body width wise.
2)Depth: Depth is one of the 3 dimensions included in the Wing Chun Formula. This is broken down into two different ranges, Mun Jong and Kiu Jong. Kiu Jong is referred to as being the outer door; this is the almost full extension of one's arm on the Centerline with the elbow-Yin Line connection. Mun Jong is the indoor hand position; this is the range in which the hand is in a position close to the elbow of an arm extended to Kiu Jong range. Understanding depth (among other things) is a way in which to truly utilize simultaneous attack and defense.
3)Height: This is the second of the 3 dimensions included in the Wing Chun Formula. The reference points on the body that are contained within the Wing Chun Formula are three fold, High, Middle, and Low Reference Points. The High Reference Point is between the upper lip and bridge of the nose. Middle Reference Point is located at the base of the Sternum, also called the Solar Plexus. The Low Reference Point is at the lower Dan Tien, or approximately three fingers below the belly button.
5)Width: Completing the 3 dimensional understanding of the Wing Chun Formula is width. Contained within the understanding of width are five lines, the two shoulder lines, the two Yin lines, and the Centerline. The Centerline, also called the one-line, is the line that starts at the top of the head and continues to the floor, dividing the body into two equally sized sections width wise. The Yin lines, termed the 1/2-lines, are located approximately at the nipples, or halfway between the Centerline and shoulder lines. The shoulder lines are called the zero lines and are located at the outer edges of the box, which are defined by one's shoulders.
4)The upper four gates: The upper four gates are defined by the three references to height and the center and shoulder lines. This paints the picture of the almost complete "box" where the ability to be in a truly Weng Kiu state within the trapping range lies.
6)The lower two gates: These gates complete the six gates defined by the Wing Chun Formula. The lower gates are comprised of the two legs, more specifically the area below the Low Reference Point divided in two by the Centerline. By understanding these two lower gates; one becomes able to truly express a six gate posture with the entire body including all four limbs. Also, only with this understanding can one begin to think about alignments and positioning based on one's self along with how this relates to one's opponent.

8. What does Jong Sau mean and how does it lay the foundation for the Hung Fa Yi system?

In English, Jong Sau translates to structure/pillar hand. Even though the English translation lends itself to believe it is solely a hand technique or concept, Jong Sau is much deeper than this. In actuality this "hand" can not truly be expressed without a much deeper understanding of what is meant by the term Jong Sau on a conceptual level. One goal of anyone studying the Hung Fa Yi system can be the proper positioning of one's complete body with respect to the true harmony of time, space, and energy. Jong Sau is first thought of as a hand technique with only upper body awareness. The second progression is understanding how this upper body awareness can be connected to the whole body and improved using all of ones six gates. From there, the Jong Sau understanding progresses to the ability to utilize movements with proper structure without temporal distortion. The final stage of the Jong Sau progression is expressing a Weng Kiu understanding of structure with the harmony of time, space, and energy.

* Quite simply, Outside the box is any fighting technique that is used, but is not wing Kui or from the Hung Fi Yi formula. The HFY Formula is entirely inside the box.

7. What does 'Black Sash' or 'Black Belt' represent in the martial arts community to you?

* To be honest, I am not sure of my opinion regarding black belt or sash. I have seen many people with such 'titles' but they don't seem to harness many qualities of one who is in harmony. Then again, I myself am not in harmony so I probably do not have the skill to know where someone else is at. However, In regards to my own self. I would like to think that reaching Black Sash or belt is an honor given to a student who has proven himself worthy to fully represent his teacher and school in all regards. He must carry himself with, honor, dignity, respectfulness, humbleness, loyalty, honesty, and compassion. I some how have a feeling that Black Sash is not the end, but more like a new door opening into a bigger world with a whole new set of lessons to learn.

Level 2 questions
Michael Isadore

1. What does the phrase “Kung Fu” mean?

Kung fu translates into an ability or skill obtained over time through hard work. You can not achieve “kung fu” without all three attributes. A non martial arts example would be a world class musician or athlete. Larry Combs (principal clarinet in Chicago Symphony) and Andrei Agassi each have good kung fu--one in clarinet and the other in tennis.

2. Is Wushu a style of martial arts?

Wushu is a style only in the movies and in the public misconceptions. The misconception is that it is an acrobatic Chinese style. Even in Houston I have heard people say they are going to the temple to study wushu. In reality, Wushu means “martial arts.” There fore all forms of martial art falls un the broader category of “Wushu.”

3. What is “Sifu” and a “Simo”? Who is your Sifu and Simo?

Sifu meand teacher (like maestro!) and Simo is his non practicing wife. My Sifu is Brad Ryan and his wife is Julie Ryan.

4. What is the Gate Theory in relationship to the Heaven, Human, Earth concept?

Gate theory is found in a man posture and divides the body into a 3 boxes (six including right/left side). The relationship to HHE concept is vertical in nature. The head area (high reference to sternum) is heaven. Human is the center torso area defined between middle reference (sternum) to the lower reference (daan tien). Earth refers to the area from the daan tien to the ground.

5. What is the difference between “Sik” and ‘Ying”? Use shapes and techniques to answer this question.

Sik and Ying are the bottom layers of a system. Sik is just the techniques and tools involved—i.e. jab, front kick. Many systems are built from the Sik level up. In HFY, the techniques were the last to be developed. Ying refers to shapes and body mechanics. The shapes are perpetual-circles and half circles and focused-triangles and straight lines. As mentioned before, the techniques in HFY are developed to support the Ying. i.e. wing chun punch because the punch supports the strong structure of a triangle.

6. What is the difference between inside the box and outside the box training?

Inside the box refers to anything that is defined and supported by the formula. Outside the box is everything else. Saan Kui training is outside the box. Many are confused and think that 6 gate structure is inside the box. This can be outside the box—unless it is specifically based on the formula, then it would be considered inside the box.

7. What does a black sash represent in the martial arts community to you?

Someone with a black sash should represent dedication to study as well as a moral individual. Obviously their technique in wing chun should be high, but they still have not mastered the art. Also, their actions in and out of the school should always be examples to the younger students and directly reflect on the teachings of the school.
