What does everyone do for physical and mental conditioning? I started out weight lifting, but was told that I should be carful not to bulk up to much because it would slow me down and make to hard to do forms. If I continued to weight lift I should concentrate on building up my back muscles.
Thanks

I have always felt that the back muscles were impotant but that the abs were more important.
Not for "looks" of course but because this seems to be from where the majority of energy and strength comes from.

I took up yoga to help with my flexibility and discovered it strengthens the body a great deal more than I thought. It also helps with my meditation and Qi Qong work.

Physical -
General conditioning such as jogging, puch ups, squats and such combined with stretching.
Mental -
Just about everything. I look for new ways to apply my kung fu to everyday things, such as work. I find that the more I do this, the more aware of how time, space, and energy apply to everything uniquely.
But aren't we forgettting something? What about the energy training? After all, we are cultivating our bodies (physical), minds (mental), AND spirits (energy), yes?
To that end, I practice my Jaam Jong every morning, as well as my Faat Ging. Nice thing is that both exercises help develop all three of those treasures!
As I cultivate each trait more and more, I am beginning to see how they are nothing more than actions of time, space, and energy. At home, training, at work, etc.
How about anyone else's energy cultivation?

I read this in Mastering KF page 86
Methods used to develop the body can include walking, standing, sitting, and reclining meditation. Different types of physical exercises such as punching, kicking, footwork, and stances to develop the connection between the body and mind are also employed. A third way to develop the body and mind connection is by using moving meditation called sets or forms to develop different feelings and strengths. With proper training in this first stage, the body is changed from weak to strong and becomes capable of enduring hardship, and the mind is changed from unfocused to disciplined and becomes capable of exacting focus with self-confidence, determination, optimism, peace, and stability. To use a teacup as an example, this first stage would be the manufacturing process of the teacup.
I didn't peck up on this the first two times I read it, I guess it took a third. :o
