My background was JKD/kali/silat. I have dabbled in wing chun kuen off and on and also some other TCMA's. I still train in the sets i have learned from Hoffman sifu. I recently just started training again. The style I currently study is Chu ka kuen. I choose not to say who my sifus are because I am in no position to talk about them. I am new and a nobody so this is as far as I'll go. Sorry im not trying to be offensive I just dont want to get in trouble. Take care

Hello!
Chi Chu Joe
Welcome to the Forum and glad to have you.The style I currently study is Chu ka kuen. I choose not to say who my sifus are because I am in no position to talk about them. Certainly people here can understand and admire the respect you show towards your Sifus. I am curious though which Chu Ka you study is it Siu Lam or Mantis? Thanks and take care.

Can you tell us about the history of your art is it the Chuka Shaolin Kuen like in the book Phoenix Eye Fist a Shaolin Fighting Art of South China by Cheong Cheng Leong i have him on video tape or is it the Chuka Chu Gar Southern Mantis of Sammy Wong and Richard Gambou and Wong Yok Gong .

I was told that though we look like SPM we are not.. Chu Ka came from the north and migrated south. FH some of your info is wrong. I cant really say HERE what or who it is all i can say is that theres a couple of blemishes in your info. Jook Lum is not Chu Ka. One in my oppinion seems more daoist like while the other is closer to Siu Lum. Chu Ka is not as elaborate in appearance but just as practical, its neat stuff. The stance and back uses(hung moon) are different also the control of air. There is more Yin/yang with our movements from what i see. But in the big picture we are all connected I see alot of simmalarities between us all. Wing chun,Bak mei, Hakka tong long and Weng chun.

It can be called Ka, kar, Ga, gar, Jia and so on . Chu, jew, zhu or i even heard it said chee. It all = royal family fist. THe surname Chu has a rich history in chinese MA culture and development. Those 2 styles you speak of might have a simmilar core having came from former Ming royal family but have developed in 2 different enviroments. The Chu Ka you speak of seems like watered down Hakka kuen. Not being derogatory but it looks like it lost more and more after each generation possibly abrsorbing the indigenous systems around it. I would consider it more a kuntao. I may be wrong but I have only seen the book. Do you have video?

Hi Chi Chu Joe,
Yes, there are many different ways of spelling Chu (Zhu, Gee, Chi, Chee)

More recently, many people believed that Chu Gar Tong Long, Chu Gar Shaolin and Chu Gar Hakka Kuen might be the same system from former Ming royal family. Hard to imagine, isn't it?

Firehawk, are you willing to share your Chu Gar video with others?

It was suggested that we copy this thread over to the mantis forum. If you don't mind, and are interested in furthering this discussion to post in that forum?
