GM Hoffman,
I am trying to remember the details of the arm bar you showed here in AZ during your visit last summer. While I can effectively mimic the arm bar and apply it successfully to another person I was hoping you could discuss and elaborate on exactly how the Chi Sim 6 1/2 principles are present or expressed in this technique.
Thanks!

Hello JK Walz,
we can discuss the armbar thru the 18 Kiu Sao. In Combat normally you can use a armbar if your opponent pushs you.
Let us imagine you have a Da (striking) Kiu - opponent protects himself by pushing you -
you can use Lai(pulling) Kiu to borrow his force - Kam (catch) Kiu his ellbow - Na (controll) Kiu - Saat (finish) Kiu.
Some details for straight armlock: twist his wrist - his arm should be straight - bring your body weight behind his ellbow- Saat is a pulling action.
Iīm very happy that you still exercise Weng Chun. By the way if someone is interested to learn here in Germany from me, we have special summerweekcamps from Juli 30-August 3 and from August 6-August10. Bamberg is a beautiful city with old castles and beautiful rivers.

Hello Grand Master Hoffman,
As I have been sharing Chi Sim with my students I repeat several times as you have to me "when there is no kiu. We must find the kiu first!" I find this to be quite useful in keeping my mind from being stiff and only looking for one or two things. This helps me to see the total picture. However as I experience things from the 18 kiu sau perspective I find my self looking for the Da (stiking) more then others. I find when trapping with Kam (catching) or grappling with na (controlling) I find myself looking for space to use Da (stiking) Does this mean I favor Da over the others? Should I look to break any habit of favoring one kiu over the others? also Is this common issue when creating and taking space? I find that Saat (finish) seems to follow Na (control) more often then some of the others. Is this common or just reflects the nature of kiu sua training?
Thank you for your time and sharing with us.
sincerly,

Hello my friend Sifu Chango Noaks,
. You wrote that you are looking for striking more then others. This depends on your opponent, your situation and your skills. If your partner/opponent gives you all the time the situation and energy to strike him Da Kiu is excellent.
Before Da Kiu there is mostly Tiu Kiu and Bot kiu. If you are using only Da Kiu you have no controll of space/time/energy.
In Weng Chun you should learn to use all of the Kius. If Saat follows Na easily your partners are innocent in grappling and havenīt a good balance.

I find it quite amaizing that through our connection. Your words carry a vast amount of weight and depth! I find that the Tiu kiu and bot kiu provides the proper space to control my partner. I'm finding myself looking closer at the tan tao (spit/swallow) body method in relationship to time and the choice of kiu! I'm finding that the Toa "swallow" provides a moment in time and additional space to determine the approprieate kiu. The Tan "spit" allows one to apply this kiu in it's proper energy or nature. Coming from this point it seems almost impossible for my partner to apply hard or stiff energy at any point! Chi Sim really breathes a new life into my practices. I find that it does not come in conflict with any program that I offer. All of my classes have found great benifits from the insites I have gained from my Chi sim practice. I'm careful not to mix them but I have gained great knowlege from the comon ground that each program shares with Chi sim. My Northern Shaolin/ Wushu program has benifited a great deal. I find the Chi Sim allows one to see many applications that had not been as clear in the past. I find that my Wu shu players find that Chi sim aids raising thier awarness of energy!
Thank you for sharing this Shaolin treasure and your continued guidence.
